Description

Norwood Green, Middlesex born Robert Douglas was educated at Dulwich College, from where he went up to Selwyn College, Cambridge University. He represented Cambridge University as a right-handed batsman and for the three following years appeared against Oxford University at Lord’s, winning three Blues between 1890 and 1892, going on to play for both Surrey from 1890 and for Middlesex from 1898 until 1905.

He first played for The Gentlemen against The Players in 1890 and again appeared in the fixture at a later date. Altogether he hit 2,661 runs in 75 first class cricket matches at average of 23.13 with a highest score of 131, his only century although he also scored 15 half centuries. In those matches he caught 48 catches and dismissed three batsman by stumping them when playing as an occasional wicket-keeper.

He also won a Blue in rugby football at Cambridge University as a forward in 1891 and subsequently played for Harlequins.

His brothers A.P., James and Sholto also played first class cricket, as did his brother-in-law RH Juckes. Of his brothers, James was the most successful, playing 197 matches at the level for Middlesex and Cambridge University between 1892 and 1913.
