Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales born and remarkably named, John Elicius Benedict Bernard Placid Quirk Carrington Dwyer, better known as E.B. Dwyer, was a tall right-arm fast-medium bowler and lower order batsman. He played cricket in Australia for Redfern Wednesday Cricket Club and then for Redfern Cricket Club. Pelham Warner encouraged him to play in England, where he arrived in early 1904, where he was engaged by Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord’s.
C.B. Fry then persuaded him to play for Sussex. After playing a few matches for Sussex in 1904 and 1905, he became a regular member of the team from 1906, playing in 61 first class matches for Sussex between 1904 and 1909, taking 179 wickets at an average of 27.94 a piece. In 1906 he took 96 wickets for 26.80 runs each, and in the following year 58 at an average cost of 27.65. He took 9-35 against Derbyshire at Hove in 1906 (and 16-100 in the match). He was less successful as a batsman. He made two half centuries, but his first class batting average was only 11.87 from 92 innings. He made his best score, 63 not out, out of 82 against Surrey at Brighton in 1906. He was dropped from the Sussex team after 1909 after his form had declined.
He died in Crewe aged 36 in October 1912, where he had been playing league cricket for Crewe Cricket Club for the season.
