Description
Ladywell, Lewisham, London born John Freeman was a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper who sometimes bowled right-arm medium pace who played 337 first class matches for Essex between 1905 and 1928. Known for his great driving power, Freeman scored 26 centuries and 60 half centuries with a highest score of 286, scoring 14,602 runs in his career at an average of 27.91. He took 231 catches and made 46 stumpings, and with his occasional bowling took 10 wickets with a best return of 3-31.
He was the younger brother of fellow Essex cricketer Edward Freeman, their father, also Edward Freeman, played 5 times for Essex in the mid 1890’s, and his nephew Douglas Freeman played for Kent once in 1937.
