Woolton, Liverpool born right-hand batsman Hubert Pilkington was educated at Eton, and enjoyed the highly acclaimed distinction of scoring a hundred when first appearing at Lord’s, making 101 against Harrow in 1896. In three matches for Eton against Harrow he made 239 runs, averaging nearly 48. Eton were not fortunate at that time, and after taking part in two drawn games with Harrow, Pilkington captained the side in a match that ended in defeat by nine wickets, despite his good work as opening batsman.
He went up to Oxford University to study after Eton, getting his Oxford Blue in 1899 as a Freshman, he scored 93 in the second innings against Cambridge University, and next season his 87 and 45 were prominent in an encounter memorable for the batting of Tip Foster, whose 171 was then the highest score in a match between the Universities.
Becoming a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1902, Pilkington found little time for first class cricket, but played occasionally for Middlesex, playing his last first class match in 1904. In 20 first class matches between 1899 and 1904, Pilkington made 4 half centuries with a highest score of 93, averaging 24.57 in the first class game.
During the First World War, Pilkington served as an officer in a Guards machine gun regiment. His elder brother Charles Pilkington played for Lancashire in addition to Oxford University and Middlesex, and Charles’ son Thomas Pilkington played one first class match for M.C.C. in the winter of 1926-27.
