Kokstad, Cape Colony born right-hand batsman Robert Dower assisted Cape Colony and Eastern Province making his first class debut in 1896-97. He played for South Africa in the first of the two Tests with Lord Hawke’s team at Johannesburg in February 1899, but in two innings scored 9 and 0. In 6 first class matches through to 1906-07 he averaged 6.83 over 12 innings with a highest score of 17. Before he died aged 88 in 1964 he was the oldest surviving South African Test cricketer.
