Lutterworth, Leicestershire born all rounder John King was a left-handed batsman and left-arm medium pace bowler who made his County Championship debut for Leicestershire in 1895. He soon became a regular in their first eleven and over more than 30 seasons played in 552 first class matches. He was a good player of fast bowling, and one who improved with age.He scored two double hundreds – the first in 1914 when 43, the second in 1923 aged 52, his best score an unbeaten 227. In his first class career he scored 34 centuries and 130 half centuries, with 25,112 runs at an average of 27.33.
He was also a canny leg spinner who varied his pace from slow to brisk medium. He took 1,204 career wickets at 25.17 apiece, with a best performance of 8-17 and he took ten wickets in a match on 11 occasions and five wickets in an innings 69 times. He also took 340 catches during his career.
King is the last batsman to have been given out ‘hit the ball twice’ in a first class game in England, when in the match against Surrey at The Oval in 1906 King stopped the ball from running onto his stumps by hitting it a second time, and then attempted to run a single. In his one Test for England against Australia at Lord’s in June 1909 aged 38, he rather strangely opened the bowling, taking 1-99 but having Ransford and Trumper dropped in the same over. In that match he scored 60 in the first innings and was then was unceremoniously dropped and never got selected again.
When he finally retired in 1925 at the age of 54, he continued his association with the game as a first class umpire for another 11 years.
His brother James King played 7 matches for Leicestershire between 1899 and 1905, and his nephew John W. King played 48 matches for Leicestershire and Worcestershire between 1927 and 1929.
