Kimberley, Nottinghamshire born wicket-keeper Ben Lilley was a right-handed batsman who made his County Championship debut for Nottinghamshire in 1921, and scored 60 in his second County match, but had to wait until the retirement of long time Notts wicket-keeper Thomas Oates in 1925 before establishing his position behind the stumps. In his first full season he scored more than 1,000 runs including “a dashing innings” of 66 against Middlesex at Lord’s. In 1927 he scored just less than 1,000 runs and appeared for The North at Sheffield in an England trial match, however he never managed to break into the England Test team which boasted the likes of George Duckworth and Les Ames behind the stumps. It was said of him “behind the stumps he has very safe hands, skill in taking varied paced bowlers showing his natural aptitude for wicket-keeping”.
He played his last match for the County in 1937 having appeared in 373 matches, in which he scored 10,496 runs at an average of 24.18, with a highest score of 124, one of seven first class centuries and 43 half centuries; and as a wicket-keeper, Lilley took 657 catches and completed 132 stumpings.
NB He was not related to the famous England wicket-keeper Dick Lilley.
