Description
Newtown, Sydney Australia born right handed batsman and right-arm legbreak bowler Tommy Andrews began his cricket career with Petersham in 1909 and then with New South Wales, making his first class debut during their 1912-13 campaign. Andrews did not set the first-class cricket scene alight in his early days. He played 14 first-class games for NSW between 1912 and 1915 for 636 runs with a top-score of 96 when he was lbw to Herbert Ironmonger playing Queensland at the SCG in just his second match. He also took 25 wickets and held nine catches.
When first-class cricket resumed after the First World War, the 28 year old scored his maiden first-class century rattling up 112 in the second innings against Victoria at the SCG in January 1919. He showed how much he had matured as a player during the five years first-class break by hitting 103 in his next game just a few days prior to Christmas 1919 playing South Australia at Adelaide Oval. Then, a little over four weeks later in January 1920, he scored a brilliant 247 in a score of 521 against Victoria at the SCG. Batting at no. 4 in the order, he occupied the crease for 299 minutes hitting 33 fours in the process.
He made his Test match debut for Australia on their 1921 Tour of England in the first Test at Nottingham that May, as Australia won by 10 wickets, and he played in 16 Tests from 1921 to 1926. At the end of 1921, the Cricketer regarded him as the third best Australian batsman on that year’s tour behind Bardsley and Macartney.
In Test match cricket he top scored with 94 against England in the Fifth Test at The Oval that August, and scored 3 further half centuries, averaging 26.90 from 592 runs scored. He also took a single wicket with his occasional bowling in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford that July when he dismissed Ciss Parkin in the second innings. His final Test match came against England at The Oval in August 1926. In 151 first class matches he scored 8095 runs at an average of 39.48 with 14 hundreds, 43 half centuries and a high score of 247 not out against Victoria at The SCG in January 1920. With his bowling he took 95 wickets at 32.10 apiece with 3 five wicket hauls and a best of 6-109, with 86 catches of which 12 were in Test matches.
He was regarded as one of the great cover-point fieldsmen. He was described as “very strong and stockily built” with “the sort of hands that resist without discomfort the hardest hits and which, moreover, always seem to be in the right place to gather the ball.” “Quickness of foot, clever anticipation and a beautiful return made by the flick of a wrist, are his in addition; and the complete result is a perfect fieldsman.” One of his greatest catches was picking up Patsy Hendren off Australia’s Arthur Mailey in the Third Test at Leeds in 1926. Everyone at the ground was in a state of disbelief when he threw the ball up at silly point after Hendren had launched into a full toss which was “going like a rocket”. He could also keep wicket if required. He also captained NSW on four occasions before ending his first class career in 1929.
He was undoubtedly the greatest cricketer in the history of Petersham C.C. playing his first game for Petersham in 1909 aged 19 and his last in 1944 aged 54.
