South Melbourne, Victoria born all-rounder Dr. John “Jack” Barrett as educated at Wesley College (Melbourne), and played in turn for South Melbourne, Melbourne University and Sydney University. When only 17 years of age he appeared for XV of Victoria against the 4th Australian team, but his first match for his State XI was against South Australia, at Melbourne, in the following 1884-85 season, when he took 5-31 in the first innings and 6-49 in the second. His chief scores for Victoria were 69, 56, and 55 against New South Wales and 68 not out against South Australia.
His medical studies kept him out of cricket for some time, but he visited England with the Australian team of 1890 and was successful. His highest innings during the tour were 97 against An England XI at Manchester, and 96 against Oxford and Cambridge Universities at Portsmouth. On debut in the Test match at Lord’s in July 1890, promoted to opener, he carried his bat through the second innings scoring an unbeaten 67 out of 176, and he also played at The Oval the following month but did little.
Overall he scored 1,226 runs in 1890 averaging 20.03. As a batsman he was left-handed with very strong defence, almost invariably playing a patient game although he could hit when he chose. He was a useful change bowler, right-arm medium pace, with a high action.
In 50 first class matches through till the 1892-93 season he made 13 half centuries, with his Manchester effort being his career high score, scoring 2,039 runs at an average of 25.81. Surprisingly lightly bowled, he took 21 wickets at 16.00 apiece, with a best performance of 6-49 and 3 five wicket innings, as well as the single 10 wicket match above.
