Description

Hope, Derbyshire born George Buckston was a right-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper. Educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge, he started his cricket playing career for Cambridge University during the 1903 season, during which he played five matches. He played one first class match for Marylebone Cricket Club (M.C.C.) in 1904 against Derbyshire, who he then joined, playing for them in two spells between 1905 and 1921.

Buckston made his County Championship debut for Derbyshire against Northamptonshire in a match which Derbyshire won the match by an innings, Northamptonshire limited to just 52 runs in their first innings. Buckston played no further matches during the 1905 season, and Derbyshire finished third bottom in the County Championship.

Buckston played a greater role during the 1906 season, playing eight County Championship matches, and made his career high total score of 96, though Derbyshire finished bottom of the table, and Buckston also played the 1907 season at the club.

Buckston served as a captain in the Derbyshire Yeomanry, serving in Egypt, Salonica and France during the First World War. Buckston then returned to the Derbyshire team in the 1920 season. He played as an opening batsman seeing off competition for the position from Leonard Oliver who was deputising for the County captain John Chapman for much of the season. Buckston was captain in the 1921 season at the age of forty, but his performance was affected by his lack of recent experience and the effects of malaria.

Buckston played 75 innings in 39 first class matches, scoring 853 runs at an average of 11.83, with a top score of 96 and three further half centuries. He took eight catches and made one stumping during his first class career.

Buckston was later High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1926. Buckston’s son, Robin Buckston, played first class cricket for Derbyshire between 1928 and 1939, and was designated club captain during his final three years within the County. Buckston’s brother-in-law, Henry Allsopp, played first class cricket for Cambridge University in 1876.
