Blythswood, Glasgow born left-hand batsman and left-arm medium paced bowler played for West of Scotland Cricket Club and scored 419 not out for West of Scotland against Priory Park in 1885. At the time, this was the highest individual score in any form of cricket. In 1895 it was said of him that he “has long been known as one of the best batsmen Scotland ever produced. He is not so prominent now as he was ten years ago but he still wields the willow with rare skill and power. In his younger days he was also an excellent footballer.”
His brother John Carrick was also a noted cricketer who played a first class match for Marylebone Cricket Club (M.C.C.) in 1882.
