Durban, Natal born Claude Carter was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler who began playing first class cricket for Natal aged 16 in 1897-98, and eventually played for them from 1898 to 1923, except for a season with Transvaal in 1910-11.
He toured England with the South African teams of 1912, when he made his Test match debut against England at Lord’s in June 1912 and August 1924, his final Test being against England at The Oval. He was South Africa’s leading bowler in the series against Australia in South Africa in 1921-22, when he took 15 wickets at an average of 21.93 and had a best Test performance of 6-50 against England at Durban in February 1914, also claiming 6 wickets against Australia at Johannesburg in 1921, taking 28 wickets overall in Test matches at 24.78 a piece. As a batsman he had a high score of 45 in Test cricket and averaged 18.10. Carter was never on a winning team in a Test.
In all first class cricket Carter played 107 matches and scored three half centuries, with a highest score of 80 not out, at an average of 11.69, taking 366 wickets at an average of 18.56 with a best performance of 7-37.
He later played Lancashire League cricket for Lowerhouse in 1925 and 1926, and represented Cornwall in the Minor Counties Championship between 1930 and 1935.
