Grantham, Lincolnshire born John Dixon had success as both a cricketer and a footballer. A right-handed batsman, Dixon was a member of the Nottinghamshire sides which dominated County cricket from 1882 to 1886. He had his best year with the bat in 1897 when he made 1,100 runs at 44.00, the only time he passed 1,000 runs in a season. Amongst those runs was his highest first class score of 268 not out, which he made opening the batting against Sussex at Trent Bridge. Dixon declared once he had passed Arthur Shrewsbury’s Nottinghamshire record of 267 with the team score at 448-7 and they won by an innings.
He was captain of Nottinghamshire when they shared the Championship in 1889 with Surrey and Lancashire. The following season, he captained his County to an innings and 26 runs win over the touring Australians and in the same season he also put in a memorable all-round performances against Leicestershire when he scored an unbeaten 126 and took nine wickets for the match. He remained County Captain until 1899 and played his last first class match in 1905.
In 253 first class matches, Dixon scored 9,527 runs at an average of 24.18 with 13 centuries and 38 half centuries. Dixon was also a useful part-time medium pace bowler and in 1900 took a career best season tally of 37 wickets at 23.89, and over his career claimed 184 wickets at an average of 27.60 a piece, with two five wicket innings and a best performance of 5-28. He also took 180 catches in first class cricket. He was a member of the Nottinghamshire committee from 1895 until his death in 1931. Dixon became the first President of the Old Nottinghamians’ Cricket Club as well serving as a Test Selector. The Members Entrance gates at Trent Bridge cricket ground are a memorial to John Dixon, unveiled by Sir Stanley Jackson, on Tuesday, 2nd May 1933.
As a footballer, Dixon was a left winger and played his club football for both Notts County and The Corinthians during the 1880’s, playing for Notts County during the 1883-84 and 1884-85 seasons, and he was selected for England, winning a single cap when he played in a 1-1 draw with Wales at Leamington Street, Blackburn in October 1885, before retiring from football on health grounds in 1886.
