Description
Chelsea, London born amateur cricketer Maurice Fitzroy was a career soldier who appeared in 56 first class matches, all as Northamptonshire’s captain, between 1925 and 1927, his captaincy being described as having “a pleasantly zealous manner”. In 1925, under his captaincy, Northamptonshire won 9 of their matches against two wins the year previously.
He had played successfully in Services cricket and was captain of I Zingari in 1924 before joining Northamptonshire. He was an attacking lower-order batsman (of his batting it was said “Fitzroy finds difficulty in restraining a natural desire to hit and takes too many risks to play lengthy innings in county cricket) who scored 1,373 runs with a highest score of 50, and with his occasional bowling took 6 wickets in only 143 balls with a best performance of 4-14. He was noted for his fielding, taking 47 catches in his first class games.
