Malvern, Victoria born right-handed batsman and leg break bowler Ross Gregory was a diminutive gifted batsman, a precocious batting talent, who made his debut for Victoria while still at school in 1933-34 and his debut in Test cricket before the age of 21 in the 1936-37 season when he played against Gubby Allen’s England at Adelaide in January 1937, and although one of the youngest Test cricket debutants for Australia was still a year or so older than Clem Hill who was 19 when he made his debut against England at Lord’s in June 1896.
Having established himself in his State XI, against the 1936-37 M.C.C. tourists he made 128 for Victoria, his stand of 262 with I. Lee being a fourth wicket record against an England team. In State matches that season he averaged over 39, with 85 against South Australia his best score, and he helped Victoria carry off the Sheffield Shield. In the Tests against England he enjoyed marked success. He scored 23 and 50 (run out) at Adelaide, where Australia won by 148 runs, and 80 in the deciding encounter at Melbourne in February 1937 where Australia won by an innings and 200 runs as Australia came back from 2-0 down to win The Ashes 3-2.
In 33 first class matches before his final match in the 1938-39 season, Gregory scored 1,874 runs at an average of 38.24 with a single century, his highest score being 128, and 17 half centuries, and with his bowling he took 50 wickets at 35.34 apiece with a best return of 5-69, his only first class five wicket haul. He also took 20 catches in first class play.
During the Second World War, Gregory enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force and attained the rank of Pilot Officer. He was killed in action near the village of Gaffargaon, East Bengal (now Bangladesh) aged 26 in June 1942.
