King William’s Town, Cape Province born all-rounder Gerald Hartigan was a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler who first played first class cricket for Border in the 1903-04 season, making his highest score of 176 not out against Eastern Province in 1910-11. No relation to his Australian namesake of the same era, Hartigan made his Test match debut in the Triangular Tournament against Australia at Old Trafford in May 1912, but he played in only twelve matches on tour, including another Test at Lord’s against England, as he fractured an arm in returning a ball from the deep field. In 1913-14 he took part in the first three Test matches against the England touring side led by Johnnie Douglas and at Johannesburg in the Second Test he was top scorer in the first innings with 51, his only Test match 50.
He continued to play provincial cricket until 1927 but despite the longevity of his career, because of the relatively few matches given first class status he played in only 37 matches, scoring 3 centuries and 8 half centuries and averaging 29.51 with the bat in those games. With his bowling he took 92 wickets at 21.08 apiece with a best return of 7-44, one of four five wicket hauls he achieved.
He also played Association football for South Africa, appearing 6 times for his country.
