Description
Pietermaritzberg, Natal born right-handed batsman Maitland Hathorn made his debut for Natal in 1897-98 and also played cricket in England for London County in 1901 on the recommendation of George Lohmann. He toured England three times with South Africa, in 1901 making centuries against Hampshire and Cambridge University, the latter a career best 239 at Fenner’s.
He made his Test match debut for South Africa against Australia at Johannesburg in October 1902, making 45 and 31, and toured England again in 1904, making 139 against Sussex at Brighton, 130 against London County at The Crystal Palace, and 128 against Leicestershire at Leicester. At Johannesburg in March 1906 he made his highest Test score and only century, scoring 102 against England in the Third Test. He then played three Test matches on South Africa’s 1907 tour to England, doing little but again scoring well in some of the tour matches, with 117 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. However compared to his tour averages of 35 and 37 in 1901 and 1904, when he scored around 1,300 runs per tour, his 1907 aggregate of 584 runs at 16.22 was a disappointment, and he lost his place in the Test side.
Four years later Hathorn played a twelfth and final Test against Australia at Adelaide in January 1911, which proved his last year in first class cricket, finishing with a Test match batting average of 17.10. In 87 first class matches, he scored 9 centuries and averaged 26.62, scoring 3,541 runs. He also took 1 wicket with his occasional bowling, and took 27 catches.
