Description
Kimberley, Cape Province born right-handed middle order batsman and leg-spin and googly bowler William Ling made his debut in first class cricket for Griqualand West in 1911 and played both sides of the First World War. He was first selected for South Africa against Australia at Durban in November 1921, when he scored 33 and 28 in his two innings, his best aggregate in his 6 Test matches, only his 35 against Australia at Cape Town the same month and 38 against England at Johannesburg in November 1922 exceeding his first innings score, ending his Test career with a batting average of16.80.
He spent a season with Eastern Province in 1928-29 before a final season with Griqualand West in 1929-30, by when he had played in 48 first class matches. With the bat he scored 3 centuries and 18 half centuries with a highest score of 187, averaging 31.16 from an aggregate of 2,618 runs. With his bowling he took 72 wickets at 31.52 apiece with a best performance of 7-60, although he only bowled 3 overs in Test matches, taking five wicket hauls on 3 occasions. He also held 20 catches in first class play.
