Description

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia born Frederick “FWH” Nicholas attended Hertford College, Oxford University and became a Blue at football (1913 and 1914) and athletics (1914). During the First World War Nicholas served with the 1st Bedfordshire Regiment. He attained the rank of Colonel and was awarded the Miltary Cross. He  played county cricket for Essex from 1912 and captained the county side into the late 1920’s, averaging 22.51 with the bat from 76 first class matches with a high score of 140, his only century although he also scored 20 half centuries.

An outside right as a footballer, he appeared for The Corinthians in the early and mid 1920’s, also being a member of their European tour parties. He played in the FA Cup tie in January 1924 which saw Corinthians defeat First Division Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at Crystal Palace in a major Cup upset. He scored 28 goals in 54 appearances for The Corinthians.

He was first capped by England Amateurs in January 1920 when he scored in a 9-0 win over Wales at Penydarren Park, Merthyr Tydfil, winning 4 caps in total, all won during 1920, scoring three goals. He also played for Great Britain in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, scoring as Britain were beaten 3-1 by Norway.

He also did athletics and played hockey to a high level.

He is the grandfather of former Hampshire and England ‘A’ cricketer and television commentator Mark Nicholas.
