Pendleton, Manchester born wicket-keeper William Phillips made his debut for Lancashire in their 1904 County Championship winning season and played 10 matches for the county through to 1908. He scored 109 runs in 18 innings with a highest score of 18 and an average of 7.26, and held 17 catches with 2 stumpings. Phillips later became an umpire who officiated in two Test matches between England and Australia in the 1921 series, at Lord’s in June and at The Oval in August.
