Description
East Preston, Sussex born Henry “Curly” Roberts was a right-arm medium pace bowler played his first game for Sussex in 1911 and played 157 matches for the County through to 1925, despite losing a considerable portion of his early career to the First World War. A decent lower order batsman, he scored one century, making an unbeaten 124, and four half centuries and averaged 13.30 from 2,302 runs scored. With his bowling he took 342 wickets at 24.17 apiece, with a best return of 7-32, and twice took ten wickets in a match on top of 18 five wicket hauls.
In 1927 Roberts became coach of the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, leaving there in 1930 to take over a similar post at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
