Description
Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk born left arm orthodox spin bowler Frank Smith played for Surrey from 1893 and was part of their County Championship winning sides of 1893 and 1895. He was awarded his County cap in 1894. His best season was in 1894 when he took 95 wickets with his “rather slow” left handed deliveries. He made 11 appearances for the short lived London County between 1901 and 1902 and played once for Transvaal in 1907, spending a number of years coaching in South Africa during the English off-season.
In 68 first class matches Smith averaged 9.79 with the bat with a highest score of 45. With his bowling he took 194 wickets with a best performance of 6-12, one of 9 five wicket innings he bowled, taking ten wickets in a match on 3 occasions. He also took 31 catches in first class play.
Smith stood as an umpire in five Test matches between 1902 and 1910, all in South Africa, and after his playing career Smith coached at Sedbergh School in Yorkshire..
