NB in the photograph Tate (left) walks out to bat for England with England captain Percy Chapman against Australia at Headingley in July 1930 in a match that finished drawn. They shared a stand of 51, Chapman being out for 45, Tate making 22 before being the ninth man dismissed as England were forced to follow on in reply to Australia’s first innings of 566.
