Description
The older brother of Herbie, Durban, Natal born left-handed middle order batsman Dan Taylor began his first class career with Natal in the 1907-08 season and played twice for South Africa in the season before the First World War, in the Fourth and Fifth Tests at home to England (both under his brother’s captaincy). On his debut at Durban in February 1914 he made 36 in both innings as Sydney Barnes took 14 wickets in England’s five wicket win; in the final Test at Port Elizabeth th following month he made 13 and 1.
Taylor had a spasmodic first class cricket career, appearing in only 11 matches all told over a 12-year period, and playing regularly for Natal only in 1912–13 and just once the following season. He passed 50 only once in his career, when he made 65, finishing with a batting average of 21.88, very close to his Test average. He also took 2 wickets with his occasional bowling with a best performance of 1-17.
