Description
Rushden, Northamptonshire born left half Eric Tomkins joined hometown club Rushden Fosse in 1911 moving to Southern League Northampton Town a year later. He played for Northampton both sides of the First World War and when The Cobblers joined The Football League in 1920 he played in their inaugural League fixture at Grimsby Town in August 1920.
After 79 appearances over their first three League campaigns Tomkins joined non league Rushden Town in 1924 but rejoined Northampton Town after a season away, making a further 8 appearances over the next two seasons before returning to Rushden Town in 1927.
As a cricketer he appeared for Northamptonshire in 13 first class matches as a right-handed batsman between 1920 and 1921 and scored 204 runs in 22 innings with a highest score of 50 not out, averaging 10.20.
